Heat Pump Water Heaters
What are Heat Pump Water Heaters?
As you may know, Strategic Electrification is the movement across America and the world to replace fossil fuel-burning technologies with electricity-based alternatives to reduce pollution, increase energy efficiency, and reduce costs for consumers and society.
Heat Pump Water Heaters (HPWHs) are being installed where cost effective to replace natural gas and propane fired water heaters.
Most water heater manufacturers have created and are producing their own versions of HPWHs.
We also recommend evaluating having a solar photovoltaic (solar PV) system installed to produce the extra electricity that may needed to be utilized in heating domestic water for your home.
How it Works
Heat pump water heaters (HPWHs) use electricity to move heat from one place to another instead of generating heat directly. Therefore, they can be two to three times more energy efficient than conventional electric resistance water heaters. To move the heat, heat pumps work like a refrigerator in reverse.
HPWHs absorb ambient heat from the surrounding air to heat water using a compressor and “Environmentally-Friendly” refrigerants such as R134a or R410a.
